David Acosta Bio
Los Angeles-based saxophonist: David Acosta
-
Widely considered one of the most quintessential and monumental examples of jazz improvisation, Sonny Rollins' record Saxophone Colossus was the first jazz anything David Acosta was introduced to at age 14, and like anyone else fortunate enough to discover this musical gem, Acosta was thereafter entranced by and hooked to Sonny’s sound...and thus began Acosta's musical journey.
-
Acosta played lead tenor for three years in his award-winning Roosevelt High School jazz band, where he was awarded outstanding soloist for his performances at a dozen jazz festivals and competitions; including prestigious festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Downbeat Jazz Festival, University of Washington Jazz Fest.
-
In the early 90’s Acosta studied for two years with two monumental jazz musicians in the world of jazz; Prestige recording artist Don Lanphere and Origin Recording artist Hadley Caliman. During this time in Seattle, Washington, Acosta also performed professionally with various local bands, including Seattle's prominent jazz ensembles, The Jazz Police, and the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO).
-
Acosta attended one of the most prominent colleges for jazz education in the world, William Paterson College in New Jersey, and while he was there he studied with jazz titans Rufus Reid, Harold Mabern, Gary Smulyan, and Todd Coolman, to name a few.
-
At 20 years old, Acosta performed in various jazz ensembles and show bands on cruise ships (Carnival and Princess Cruises).
-
Shortly thereafter he was enticed by an opportunity to move to Rome Italy and play with one of his saxophone heroes of the younger generation, Rosario Guiliani. While in Rome for upwards of a year and a half, Acosta met, befriended, and studied with clarinet jazz legend, Tony Scott. Acosta was constantly in high demand, performing regularly at the most prominent jazz clubs around Rome. He was also a teacher and music clinician.
-
Acosta moved to Los Angeles in 1999.
-
As a sideman he has worked and toured with numerous award-winning artists such as Joe Williams, John Pizzarelli, Tierney Sutton, Bennie Maupin, Maureen McGovern, Nell Carter, and numerous other accomplished musicians all over the world.
-
Acosta is currently recording his debut album (see samples under "Music" tab!) with target release set for July, 2022.
